One hundred and twenty teachers
in Ogun State’s names were fraudulently used to borrow a whopping loan of N200
million from First Bank Plc in the state.
The teachers have come together and threatened to sue the bank for maligning their names and reputation.
The teachers have come together and threatened to sue the bank for maligning their names and reputation.
The chairman of the state
chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Dare Ilekoya, stated on Wednesday
while briefing newsmen on the matter.
He said all the affected
teachers who were taken to Lagos for interrogation by the operatives of the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission were innocent.
The 120 teachers who were
mainly from public secondary schools in the Abeokuta South Local Government
area of the state were accused of obtaining N200 million loan in 2011 and were
interrogated two weeks ago.
The affected teachers who
were asked to report at the EFCC Lagos office were divided into six batches of
20 and they had been quizzed by the operatives of the commission.
While giving the report of
what transpired, Ilekoya said all the teachers were cleared by the EFCC, saying
none of them took any loan from the
bank, from the investigation conducted.
Ilekoya, who said the NUT
would be waiting for the outcome of EFCC’s investigation into the fraud,
advised that the anti-graft agency should beam its searchlight on the bank in
order to fish out the perpetrators and their accomplices.
While he described the
affected teachers as ‘heroes of the struggle,’ the NUT boss warned that the
issue must not be swept under the carpet, describing the fraud as a national
disgrace.
He said, “This is a
national disgrace, an assault on our collective psyche which must not be swept
under the carpet. All the culprits and actors found culpable in this shameful
act of fraud must be brought to book at all costs.”
