E'Dena Hines, 33, was found
lying on a street in Washington Heights, Manhattan, with multiple stab wounds
to her chest.
She was Morgan Freeman
step-granddaughter and, E’Dena was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead.
A 30-year-old man was taken
into police custody at the scene - in front of Ms Hines' apartment on West
162nd Street.
In a statement, Freeman
paid tribute to Ms Hines, who was the granddaughter of the actor's first wife
Jeanette Adair Bradshaw.
"The world will never
know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer," the
statement said.
"Her friends and
family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person.
"Her star will
continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in
peace."
Ms Hines, an actress and
writer, studied at the Graduate Acting Program in New York and went on to teach
"under exposed youth" in Memphis, Tennessee, according to her
website.
