A leopard tortoise from
South Africa named Bertie, won a place in the Guinness Book Of Records as the
speediest type within their species in the world.
The tortoise won his place
with a speed of 0.6mph that would mean he could travel 100 metres (109yds) in
six minutes and smashing the record held by Charlie from South Yorkshire since
1977.
Bertie's epic achievement
was accomplished at Adventure Valley in Brasside, Durham, in July last year,
and is twice the speed of an average tortoise.
Owner Marco Calzini, said:
"Bertie now lives in a luxury enclosure with lady friend Shelly and his
certificate proudly displayed on the wall.
"To be in the book is
a dream come true, a massive achievement!"
Despite his record win,
Bertie remains low maintenance, deriving his high-energy from his regular snack
of strawberries and slow periods of grazing.
