FBI agents dug up $600,000 buried in the backyard of a Los Angeles home once occupied by a former armoured truck driver who has admitted stealing cash.
The money, in neatly
wrapped bundles of $100 and $20 notes contained in plastic containers, was
buried underneath a patch of trees in Fontana.
Yanez and another driver,
Aldo Esquivel Vega, of Pomona, California, were transporting a shipment of cash
for Bank of America in June 2014 when they stopped in a car park and
electronically opened the doors of their Loomis truck, according to the FBI.
More than $1m was removed
from the truck and carried off in a rubbish bin, authorities have said.
Around $85,000 was
recovered at the Fontana home after Yanez's arrest, but the remainder of the
money has been missing for more than a year.
The remaining $300,000 is still missing.
An FBI spokeswoman said a
tip off from a source led agents to the backyard of the property.
Vega is awaiting sentencing
for his role in the heist.
Two other people, including
Yanez's wife, are awaiting trial for helping to facilitate the crime.
