According to residents of
the community, four marine police officers have been killed by suspected sea
pirates in Rivers State.
Channels Television reports
that the incident occurred in Abonnema waterways in Akuku Toru Local Government
Area of Rivers State when a gunboat was hijacked with the policemen on board.
The gunboat was reported to
have been attacked by armed militants on Sunday after it left Abonnema Wharf
Jetty for a routine patrol.
One of the corpses was seen
floating on Monday with gunshot wounds after the other three had been recovered
earlier, with the gunboat missing.
The spokesperson for the
Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni said the command had begun
compiling its report on the incident.
However, the police
authority in the state is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
This attack is coming after
the military lost some officials in a boat mishap on Monday in Bayelsa state.
