Scores of students of the
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state, flooded the streets on Monday,
July 23, to protest the death of one Francis Madubuobi, a final year
Microbiology student, who passed away during a game of basketball on Saturday,
July 21.
The students alleged that
after the deceased was rushed to the university’s medical centre, the personnel
at the facility did not do enough to save his life, Punch reports.
The university’s director
of information, Dr Emmanuel Ojukwu, however stated that the deceased did not
have any pulse when he was brought in.
He added that Francis was
taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where he was
confirmed dead.
However, his narrative was
countered by an eyewitness who spoke on the condition of anonymity, and who
claimed that he was one of the people who rushed the deceased to the medical
center.
According to the
individual, instead of treating the deceased when he was brought in, the
medical personnel asked them to start praying for him.
The protesting students
vowed to keep up the protest until the situation is addressed by the university’s
management; as they stated that this was the second time a student was dying in
such circumstances.
However, the authorities of
the institution insisted that the late student had passed away before he
arrived at the medical center.
It released a statement
which read: “The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has received
with great shock, the painful and sudden demise of one of our students, Francis
Chinedu Mmadubuobi, a 400 level student of the Department of Applied Microbiology
and Brewing.
“The deceased slumped while
playing basketball with his friends on Saturday, July 21, 2018.
"The deceased was
quickly rushed to the University Medical Centre but had no pulse upon
examination. This means that he had died before being brought to the University
Medical Centre.”
The deceased meant to write
his last paper on Monday, July 23.
