Senator Shehu Sani has
slammed the Nigeria Police Force for dismissing the assassination attempt on
the life of deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, and calling it burglary.
The senator representing
Kaduna central senatorial district, said the police stance means for one to
prove and convince the security agencies that there is a threat to his life, he
or she has to actually be killed.
“The recent downgrade of
the assassination attempt on DSP Ike’s life to ‘a burglary attempt’ means that
for one to prove and convince the security agencies that there is a threat to
his life, he or she has to actually be killed; and to prove more convincingly,
he has to be buried,” the vocal senator tweeted.
The police had said
preliminary investigation carried out so far did not reveal assassination
attempt on the life of Ekweremadu and his family but a case of burglary.
“However, investigation is
still ongoing to determine if there is any other motive behind the offence,”
police spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood said in a statement sent to Legit.ng.
Meanwhile, in a swift
reaction, the Senate has mandated its committee on police affairs to
investigate the incident.
President of the Senate,
Bukola Saraki, berated the Nigeria Police for their alleged late response to
Ekweremadu’s emergency calls. He also mandated the committee to follow up on
the investigations by the police.
