The federal ministry of
power works and housing has reportedly proposed a budget of N167.96m in 2019
for the purchase, maintenance and fuelling of generators at its headquarters
and various agencies.
Giving a break down on how
the sum is to be spent, The Punch, citing analysis of the 2019 budget proposal
of the ministry, reports that the headquarters of the power ministry, set aside
N26.6m for the maintenance of plants/generators, while plant/generator fuel
cost was put at N16.3m.
The ministry also made a
budget proposal of N50m for the purchase of generators while its national rural
electrification agency proposed to spend N488, 000 on the maintenance of plants
and generators, while N1.55m was budgeted as fuel cost for its plants and
generators.
Another arm of the
ministry, the Nigerian electricity management services agency’s headquarters
proposed to spend N2m on maintenance of plants and generators. It plans to
spend N4m to fuel the plants and generators in 2019.
The sum of N1.5m was
proposed by the national power training institute for the maintenance of plants
and generators and another N1.5m for the fuelling of the equipment.
The report shows that
Nigeria electricity liability management limited proposed the sums of N2.3m and
N3.31m for the maintenance and fuel cost of plants/generators respectively.
The analysis further shows
that the office of the surveyor-general of the federation, under the works arm
of the ministry, proposed N3.1m and N5.84m for the maintenance and fuelling of
its plants/generators in the 2019 fiscal year.
Meanwhile, the minister of
power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, has declared that the Nigeria’s
current power generation has reached 7000 Mega Watts.
Fashola made this known in
Calabar at the federal ministry of power, works and housing 4th edition retreat
for top directors, heads of units and chief executives of agencies and
parastatals.
News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) reports that the minister said as of three years ago, power generation
was a problem as the country was 2,690 mega watts of electricity on the
average.
