NGO Moves To Reduce Poverty Among Widows

An Abuja based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Sure Smile Gender World (SSGW) has disclosed plans to reduce poverty among widows in the society.

The NGO’s founder, Udegbunam Chioma at the 2019 International Windows’ Day (IWD), unveiled a multipurpose cooperative known as sure smile gender world multipurpose co-operative society (SSGWMOCS), aimed at uplifting the standard of windows.

Udegbunam said the support was to ensure that the windows are provided with something that could provide food for them.

At the commencement of the scheme in Kuje Area Council of FCT, the NGO distributed farm inputs and seedlings to windows in the area to starts up farming businesses that will add more meaning to their lives.

The NGO also came along with the public department of health in the FCT to talk to the widows and taste them on various infections like leprosy, Tuberculosis, Brunel ulcer, hepatitis and lots more.

One of the FCT Directors in Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Dr. Nkem Akanegbu, disclosed that the NGO is an organization that focus on women especially widows.

She explained that the FCT agriculture secretariat is ready to partner with association to help widows and women.

According to her, the immediate past minister of FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello gave 50 percent off on farm imputes and animal rearing, for the masses.

On his part, the chairman Kuje Area Council, Abdullahi Sabo commended the NGO and its founder for the initiative.

Sabo assured the widows that his administration would provide enabling environment for activities that will continue to uplift their standards.

Some of the widows who spoke to journalists, Hallatu Hussaini said she would make use of the opportunity and train her children in school.

Mrs Eze Adams explained that she was pleased with the good initiative, saying“what I have benefited here is great, especially fishery and poultry, with this gesture widows will have more sense of belonging.”
