According to Punch, last weekend marked a special phase in the Nigerian music industry as the
period ushered in yet another festival.
Titled Five star music festival, the event that took place at the
Golden Tulip Hotel, FESTAC Town, saw veteran musicians, King Sunny Ade, Onyeka
Onwenu, Bright Chimezie, Bongos Igwe, Ras Kimono and a host of others, receiving
awards for their contribution to the growth of the music industry in Nigeria.
Presenting the awards, which were accompanied by return tickets to
destinations like France, Italy, United Kingdom and Switzerland, Innocent
Idibia, popularly called Tuface, thanked the musicians for being the pacesetters
and providing the initial platform for young musicians to gain international
recognition. Onwenu received commendation for her mentorship role and for
providing free studio space for aspiring musicians during her time.
The audience was treated to live performances by hip hop stars and comedians,
including Terry G, Timaya, Whiz Kid, Olamide, Sound Sultan, Bright Chimezie, Ras
Kimono, Onyeka Onwenu and others.
Jointly hosted by Okey Bakassi, Steve Onu (Yaw) and Atuyota Akporobomeriere
(Alli Baba), the show, a brainchild of Shousha Mohsen, O'brien Ufondu and
Kinsgley Okonkwo – KCEE of the former KC Presh musical group – witnessed a huge
turnout of fans and FESTAC Town residents, as well as eminent personalities like
the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akinlolu and the chairman of Capital Oil, Mr. Ifeanyi
Uba.
