Commission recovers 60 stolen Nigerian artefacts

According to the Guardian, the National Commission on Museum and Monument has recovered over 60 stolen Nigerian cultural objects from six foreign countries.
Director-General of the commission, Mallam Yusuf Abdallah, disclosed this at this year's Museum Day celebrations at the weekend.
Historically, the 18th of May every year is always set aside to celebrate International Museum Day which aims at raising awareness on the importance of museum in the development of the society. The theme of this year's celebration is "Museum, Memory, Creativity and Social Change."
In his remarks on the occasion, Abdallah said the recovery of the stolen Nigerian cultural objects was through international cooperation and understanding with the countries. He added that the commission has recorded tremendous achievements such as capacity in preservation and documentation by improving bilateral relationship between Nigerian museum and other institutions within and other parts of the world through collaboration.

Plateau State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism commended the Jos Museum for organising the programme and promised to partner and collaborate with the institution in order to have a better celebration next year. He observed that the much crowd she saw at the occasion was evidence that peace has returned to the state.
Director of Research at the National Institution for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, Prof. Olu Obafemi, who presented a paper on "Memory, Creativity and National Transformation", said the strength of the museum lies in the richness of the historical heritage of the nation.
