Thieves appear to have struck again during an event at the Cannes Film Festival, this time making off with a $2.6m (£1.7m) necklace during a celebrity party.
The piece by Swiss jeweller De Grisogono went missing just a week after $1m (£660,000) worth of Chopard jewels were stolen when a safe was ripped from a hotel wall in the French resort.
The latest theft took place at a festival party in the neighbouring town of Cap d'Antibes - at an exclusive chateau called the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.
Actress Sharon Stone and socialite Paris Hilton were among those at the event.
Fawaz Gruosi, the founder of the De Grisogono jewellery house, said the theft occurred despite a large security presence.
"What happened is not clear yet," said Mr Gruosi. "The police are trying to do an investigation. That night we had 80 security people hired directly from De Grisogono and we have no idea, clear idea, so far of what happened."
High-end jewellery makers often loan their gems to Hollywood stars during the Cannes festival to gain publicity.
The film festival, which also saw a man arrested during a gun scare last week, wraps up on May 26 when the prestigious Palme d'Or for best film is announced.
