Our sky must be safe
I want to use this opportunity to send my condolences to the families that
lost loved ones in the Lagos plane crash. I ask the question: Why must we
transport our dead with plane?
In this particular case, there was no need to
make such a journey by air expect if it was in the late governor's will that he
wanted to be air lifted when he is dead.
Lagos State is not London where air
travel is a must, I personally think if our politicians spend money and repair
the roads, there will be no need to air lift them when their own time arrives. I
want to adopt a friend's quote that "the monsters men breed turn around to
devour them." Death from the sky is the worse calamity that could hit anyone.
Our skies must be safe.

Don't blame govt alone
To be honest, this is not the time to trade blames. It's not about the
government alone but individuals. Plane crashes don't happen without human
errors. For instance, if the regulatory body had put everything in place, the
plane carrying the late Agagu's corpse wouldn't have crashed.
The incident
clearly shows what happens when the maintenance team neglects their duty. Every
time there is a crash, everyone blames the government, that is wrong. Airlines
need to constantly check their planes, they are the culprits. Again, I feel that
these airlines are out to make money and don't really care about the safety of
their passengers. All they do is cure and not prevention.

Accidents can't be eliminated
Only last night I was watching a documentary, and I realised that accidents
happen no matter how much regulations you put in place to prevent them. There is
no way you can rule out accidents; no matter how careful we are. The only thing
is that we should step up efforts to secure our airlines. In my opinion, the
aviation sector is one of the sectors that the Goodluck Jonathan administration
has credibly done well. But then, accidents happen and there is nothing anybody
can do about it. Even in the United States where they are sophisticated, planes
still crash.

Planes are not properly checked
I doubt if the so-called expatriates in the aviation sector are doing their
routine checks at all or maybe they are not doing it thoroughly. We are living a
life of assumption, no one has taken the pain to actually check why these planes
crash. We all need to wake up.

Someone should be held responsible
Frequent plane crashes have become a saddening plague amidst us. I wonder
what the aviation minister is doing about this problem. Even private planes are
not safe. I pray none of us will fall victim of their negligence. I feel the
aviation minister should set up a committee that will regularly check airplanes.
However, until someone is held responsible for these mishaps (frequent plane
crashes), I don't see any headway. Some people need to be held accountable
whenever a plane crashes. May the soul of the victims rest in Peace!

We need discipline
Corruption is our major problem. We don't properly look into what matters,
and we don't spend on good equipment. That should be the business of the
Minister of Aviation. Aircraft should be checked before takeoff and return by
experts. There should be better investigations and security. There should also
be discipline in the aviation industry. Also, the Minister of Aviation should
thoroughly look into the security breaches in our airports.

Aviation sector has failed
The control measures put in place to enforce flight safety have failed. The
system should be reviewed and made to be more effective. The operating policy of
airlines should be critically enforced. The aviation sector has failed to
checkmate these planes, which is why the country has constantly witnessed plane
crashes.

Sector needs thoroughness
Sincerity, honesty, loyalty and excellence are great values which I think are
in short supply in African countries particularly Nigeria. Aviation is a
sensitive industry which requires great level of thoroughness and attention to
details regarding its' operations. Unfortunately, strict adherence to
professionalism is not on real patronage and this has sabotaged the safety of
Nigerians who are in constant demands of aviation services. Professionalism is
the key and would help the current situation.

Aviation authorities are careless
The news about the recent plane crash is really tragic. It is as a result of
technical carelessness on the part of the aviation sector. They keep managing
old planes that should have been phased out because of their love for money and
gratification. They place no value on the lives of people. I'm so sad. May God
heal our land and comfort the families of the deceased.

Nigeria lacks accountability
In my view, two of the worse 'diseases' in Nigeria are: horrible management
and a gross negligence of facilities. It shows in our roads, schools, government
infrastructure, institutions, everywhere! A third detestable culture of our
leadership is lack of accountability. If we start to inquire into the root of
these plane crashes, we will run into dead ends and meaningless explanation.
The emphasis should not be on family of famous Nigerians, but simply on the
fact that Nigeria has lost lives meaninglessly again.

We need God's intervention
I think in this country, we need to be very prayerful. We were still talking
about Boko Haram; recently they killed about 50 students and now plane crash. We
are seeing tragedy here and there; we need to pray for God's intervention.
Beyond all we can do physically, we need God's help. We also need to value life.
If 50 students were killed in other countries, they would have lowered their
flags and mourned. We are getting used to tragedy, and it is not supposed to be
so. Of course, we need to do whatever is necessary to upgrade our aviation
sector but more importantly, we need divine intervention.
- Ebenezer Oyesusi
Our leaders are corrupt
Nigeria is filled with corrupt politicians. A large number of them have
dipped their hands into evil. It's sad that innocent citizens die with them.
However, the frequent plane crashes in the country clearly shows that the
aviation industry needs more attention.
