Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Banned Political Campaigns In Churches After Mass Death

In the aftermath of the tragedy at Uke Adoration Ground in Anambra State that left nearly 30 people dead, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) South-East chapter has banned political campaigns in churches across the zone.

Talking to journalists on Monday, Chairman of CAN in South East and the Bishop of Enugu Anglican Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, has called the Federal Government to set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the remote causes of the tragedy, saying that the panel set up by Governor Peter Obi of Anambra was wrong as the governor could not be a judge in his own case.
Chukwuma also stated that the group was becoming disappointed on how politicians come inside churches to campaign. He added that CAN sympathize with the relatives of the Uke stampede victims.

“It is my own duty as CAN chairman South-East to ban all politicians from attending our churches with their political teams for campaigns. The church should also stay clear of partisan politics because there are different kinds of people in the church that belong to different political parties.

 

“We appeal to priests, pastors, Bishops, clergymen to please avoid politicians coming to use churches as campaign arena. This does not augur well for our spiritual growth.

Chukwuma described unfolding events in Anambra State as worrisome and urged the people of the state not to allow themselves to be bought over by money bags. "They should be very clear on who they want to rule the state and the wish of God should be upheld," the Bishop added.
It will be recalled that a deadly stampede sparked around 2 am on Saturday after Governmor Peter Obi of Anambra state and his party’s candidate for governor, Willie Obiano, visited the Catholic night vigil.
