Jennifer Hudson held back tears while accepting a humanitarian award for her work following the shootings of her nephew, mother and brother.
The Oscar-winning actress received the trophy at the People's Choice Awards.
She was accompanied on stage by her sister Julia Hudson and became choked up as she said: "My mother always taught us without family you have nothing.
"Whether you know it or not, we all are family. What happens to the other happens to us. It's one thing to be a celebrity and have power, but it means nothing if we're not making a difference and helping someone else."
Hudson created the Chicago-based Julian D King Gift Foundation with her sister, in honour of her nephew, Julian King, who was killed in 2008 at the age of seven.
The foundation aims to provide stability and positive experiences for children.
Hudson was presented the award by LL Cool J.
"It feels good to see positivity acknowledged. Where we come from all you hear about is who shot who and who went to jail," she said.
"There is more to life than the block you live on. We want to show them that I came from the same area and if I can do it, you can do it too. It does not stop there."
Sandra Bullock, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were the big winners at the awards which honours artists from the TV, film and music world.
Bullock picked up four awards including favourite movie actress for her role in Gravity.
She also won a share of favourite movie duo with co-star George Clooney, favourite comedy movie actress for her role in The Heat and favourite drama movie actress.
Timberlake dominated the music categories with three wins for favourite male artist, favourite R&B artist and favourite album for his mega-selling The 20/20 Experience.
Britney Spears was named favourite pop artist. One Direction won the favourite band award.
Veteran Johnny Depp won favourite movie actor, even though The Lone Ranger was a major flop. Robert Downey Jr took best action star, Adam Sandler best comedy actor and Leonardo DiCaprio favourite dramatic movie actor.
