Well, Frank Ocean is not directly in the line of fire, but I guess you can say the folks at TufAmerica still thinks he’s a thief. The company—known for suing artists for copyright infringement on a regular (Jay Z, Kanye West)—is coming at Vivendi and Universal Music Group over an uncleared sample of Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” interpolated into Ocean’s Channel Orange highlight, “Super Rich Kids.”
This is the funny part: TufAmerica only owns 3.15% of the hit song’s copyright, which stems from “Real Love” ’s use of a tidbit from the Honeydrippers “Impeach the President.” In other words, they are suing Frank’s peeps for using a sample of a sample. (Are times really that tuf, America? Have a seat.)
