Prisoner Suffocates In Prison

According to Daily Post, Damina Jauro Audu, a prisoner in the Garu Satellite Prison, Jigawa State died yesterday after he was suffocated, following extreme congestion in his cell.

Damina's death was discovered during a visit to the prison by the state’s chief judge, Justice Aminu Sabo Ringim and some other stakeholders like Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association who were there to assess its condition with a view to decongesting it.

The prison which was designed to hold only 50 inmates, now holds over 160 people who are either serving jail terms or awaiting trial and are now striving to stay alive, following the intense heat.

In a statement by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Dutse branch duly signed by its chairman, Barrister Adamu Turaki, the situation at the Garu satellite prison was described as inhuman.

The NBA is therefore calling on the minister of interior, Abba Moro and the comptroller-general of the prison service to intervene and address the situation.

“It is our view that the urgent intervention of the Interior Minister by way of commissioning and utilizing the new satellite prison built by the state government in Kiyawa local government area, would help in ameliorating the precarious condition of the inmates in Garu prison, also considering the present weather condition that may lead to more deaths if not check”, the statement emphasised," Turaki said.

The NBA therefore called on the concerned authority to ensure that the prison is decongested by removing 110 inmates from Garu without delays.
