The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the seats in Saturday’s council election in Kano State, the Chairman of Kano Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Dr Sani Malumfashi, said in a statement issued on Sunday. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the results of the poll.

The APC won all the 44 local government chairmanship and the 484 councillorship seats "as officially declared by returning officers at the various levels", Malumfashi said.
He thanked the state government, politicians and residents of Kano State for the support given KANSIEC before and during the poll.
The previous local government election was held seven years ago. Back in 2007 the poll was marred by serious violence. This year, however, "the election has been largely successful and peaceful", the KANSIEC Chairman said.
A Leadership correspondent who visited polling units in Minjibir, Fagge, Gwale and Municipal LGAs also reported a smooth running of the election exercise.
Some violence erupted in Kura, Shanono and Bebeji LGAs where political thugs attempted to snatch the ballot boxes. Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso confirmed the incident but assured that the security operatives are on top of the situation and no one was killed.

19 political parties contested the election. But only the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contested all posts.
Addressing newsmen on Sunday in Kano, a former governor and chieftain of PDP in the state Malam Ibrahim Shekarau said that the party rejected the outcome of the poll. He said KANSIEC had failed to conduct a free and fair election.
Shekarau added that his party had collected evidence of electoral malpractices and would go to court to defend the principles of democracy as enshrined in Nigerian constitution.
