Kenya Transgender Celebrates Victory

A Kenyan transgender won the case in the country’s high court, following permission has been given for the man’s name to be changed to a female’s name in the applicant’s school certificate.
Born Andrew Mbugua, the activist finally celebrated victory as the education authorities were ordered to comply with the court ruling and change the name for Audrey in the 2001 certificate, BBC reports.
In the contest of Kenya, which sticks to the conservative views regarding sexuality, the incident is considered a big win.
The 30-year old applicant commented on the outcome of the legal process as she spoke with Reuters.
“We won. It’s a huge watershed moment.”
Mbugua’s battle for being recognized as a woman stunned many Kenyans, because she managed to reason her decision in the court. However according to the ruling, Mbugua will have to pay for any extra costs incurred by the council to make the change.
Interestingly, it is already the second legal victory of the activist. In July Audrey had her lobby group Transgender Education and Advocacy registered following the court decision that there were to reasons for the authorities to refuse Mbugua to do that.
