Hip-Hop Yams Dies At 26

 
The founder of hip-hop group A$AP Mob, has died aged 26.
The news broke on Twitter after the Harlem group's account tweeted "RIP @ASAPYAMS".
The star whose real name was Steven Rodriguez, is credited with helping the group secure a record contract and guiding its members A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg to stardom.

In a statement his record label Sony/RCA said: "All of us at RCA Records are shocked and saddened to hear of the death of A$AP Yams.

"As one of the creative forces behind A$AP Worldwide, Yams' vision, humour and dedication to the members of A$AP Mob will always be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."

A New York Times profile said Yams spent his "formative years studying" hip-hop which he was "obsessed" with.
He is quoted as saying: "Rocky’s like Luke Skywalker, and I'm Yoda."
It is not known how Yams died but stars of the music world have paid tribute online.

A$AP Rocky tweeted: "RIP YAMS. I LOVE YOU BROTHER".
"Rest in peace Yams. A$AP is family," wrote Drake.
Azealia Banks tweeted: "A.S.A.P YAMS should be remembered as a leader, an innovator and most importantly as an important part of NYC youth culture."
