In Kano the northern part
of Nigeria Alhaji Inuwa Wada, on Tuesday November 24th 2015 died at the age of
96 after illness.
The deceased was the former
minister of defence, first generation politician and elder statesman who until
his death held the traditional title of Magajin Garin Kano was born in 1917 to
the family of Malam Muhammadu Usma.
Wada’s funeral was conducted
Tuesday evening at the Emir’s Palace, Kano, as a sign of respect for the soul
of the departed elder state-man.
He enrolled at the famous
Shahuci Elementary School, Kano in 1938. After the mandatory Qur’anic
Education, the young Inuwa Wada enlisted at the then Middle School in 1938.
His quest to further his
education saw him at the Katsina Higher College from 1933-1938 and became a
teacher of History, English and Geography back in his native Kano.
He will be fondly
remembered as he contested the presidential ticket under the defunct Social
Democratic Party (SDP) in 1991 where he lost the primaries to the late MKO
Abiola.
A veteran parliamentarian,
Inuwa Wada dwelled into the murky waters of politics in 1945 and was a founding
member of the Northern Peoples’ Congress (NPC) and was its secretary and
national organizer. He succeeded late Muhammadu Ribadu as Defence Minister in
1965 after the death of the latter.
