The state Governor, Nyesom
Wike, had on Saturday during a meeting
with Gowon and officials of Nigeria Prays, declared that the state government
would immortalise the former head of state for his role in the creation of the state.
Rivers State Government has
renamed the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt as Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port-Harcourt
in honour of the former Head of State who created the state in 1967.
The state government also
renamed the Old Aba Road in Port Harcourt as Yakubu Gowon Road.
In a statement yesterday
signed by the Special Assistant to the State Governor on Electronic Media,
Simeon Nwakaudu, the state took the step to show appreciation to Gowon for
creating the state.
Wike had said it was not
fair that there was no notable edifice in the state named after Gowon, and
promised to immortalise the former head of state before leaves the state.
