The queen of talk show Oprah
Winfrey spoke about her rape ordeal in public again.
The woman who was once
named the richest woman in the world molested and raped as a young girl by
several of her relatives, including a cousin at age nine.
Although she has risen
above all that horror now, the 61-year old re-visited her past while talking of
all the anguish she faced as a child, and the horror and pain of both having
and losing a child at 14.
The former talk show host
revealed this to a crowd of 15,000 people during her recent speech at the Rod
Laver Arena in Melbourne.
“I did an interview with a
reporter before I came to Australia and she said I should name the baby son who
died,” she said.
“So I have named him, I had
a little boy named Canaan,” 61-year-old Winfrey said. “I did have a son. And I
named him Canaan because Canaan means new land, new life.”
Then she narrated her story
of how she was raped at a very tender age by her family members. “I was raped
at 9 years old by a cousin, then again by another family member, and another family
member,” she continued. The abuses resulted in her getting pregnant at the age
of 14 and she tried to hide it because she felt so much “pain and shame.”
“I took to my bed and cried
for three days. I felt devastated. Wounded. Betrayed. How could this person do
this to me.I imagined that every person on the street was going to point their
finger at me and scream, ‘Pregnant at 14, you wicked girl … expelled!'” She
revealed.
Few weeks after the child
was born, he died in the hospital. She never spoke publicly about him until a
relative broke the story years in 1990.
