Authorities said the
minibus swerved and smashed head-first into the other vehicle near the town of
Moulins, in the Allier region.
A group, who were all
Portuguese, were travelling from Switzerland to Portugal for the Easter holiday
when the crash happened on the Centre-Europe Atlantic Road.
Twelve people, including a
seven-year-old girl, have been killed after a minibus collided with a truck on
"the deadliest road in France".
The minibus driver and two
Italian drivers of the truck were injured but are expected to survive.
An investigation has been
opened into the cause of the crash but the minibus driver was not under the
influence of alcohol, police added.
Locals have nicknamed the
motorway "the road of death" because of the number of accidents on
it.
There are thought to be
only four passing places in the area, leading to calls for a second lane for a
number of years.
An official told the AFP
news agency: "It's the deadliest road in France. When you add it up, we've
had 15 deaths in a year."
