It was a great success, reportedly grossing $126m (£113m) worldwide. Russell Crowe wrote on Twitter: "Than you for believing in me... in reality you made my job a career."
Curtis Hanson, the Oscar-winning director of LA Confidential, has been found dead at his home in California at the age of 71.

Los Angeles police said paramedics found Mr Hanson at his Hollywood Hills home on Tuesday and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police spokesman Tony Im said Hanson died from natural causes.

Hanson had retired some years ago after falling ill with Alzheimer's, according to Variety.com
He and script writer Brian Helgeland won an Oscar in 1997 for their adapted screenplay of the James Ellroy novel.

He was nominated for best director, which won an Oscar for actress Kim Basinger.
The film was also nominated for its cinematography, art direction, sound, editing and score.

The iconic production reproduced 1950s Los Angeles, from the streets to the costumes, using a cast that included Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito and David Strathairn.
Hanson followed LA Confidential with the comedy Wonder Boys, starring Michael Douglas and continued his winning streak with 8 Mile, starring Eminem and telling a fictionalised story about the rapper's life.

Eminem paid tribute to the director. In a statement, he said: "Curtis Hanson believed in me and our crazy idea to make a rap battle movie set in Detroit.
