It was a
great success, reportedly grossing $126m (£113m) worldwide. Russell Crowe wrote
on Twitter: "Than you for believing in me... in reality you made my job a
career."
Curtis Hanson, the
Oscar-winning director of LA Confidential, has been found dead at his home in
California at the age of 71.
Los Angeles police said
paramedics found Mr Hanson at his Hollywood Hills home on Tuesday and he was
pronounced dead at the scene.
Police spokesman Tony Im
said Hanson died from natural causes.
Hanson had retired some
years ago after falling ill with Alzheimer's, according to Variety.com
He and script writer Brian
Helgeland won an Oscar in 1997 for their adapted screenplay of the James Ellroy
novel.
He was nominated for best
director, which won an Oscar for actress Kim Basinger.
The film was also nominated
for its cinematography, art direction, sound, editing and score.
The iconic production
reproduced 1950s Los Angeles, from the streets to the costumes, using a cast
that included Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Danny
DeVito and David Strathairn.
Hanson followed LA
Confidential with the comedy Wonder Boys, starring Michael Douglas and
continued his winning streak with 8 Mile, starring Eminem and telling a
fictionalised story about the rapper's life.
Eminem paid tribute to the
director. In a statement, he said: "Curtis Hanson believed in me and our
crazy idea to make a rap battle movie set in Detroit.
