The Nigerian Air Force
(NAF) has set up a panel of inquiry to look into the allegation of harassment
and shooting at motorists by its airmen.
Squadron Leader Chidinma
Ojukwu, acting command Public Relations Officer (PRO), Headquarters Logistics
Command, made this known in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Sunday, November
11.
Some media reports had
indicated that soldiers (NAF airmen) harassed and shot at motorists around Iwo
Road area of Ibadan on Friday, November 9.
Part of the statement read:
“The attention of the Logistics Command of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has
been drawn to an online publication alleging that soldiers (NAF airmen) were
harassing and shooting motorists around the Iwo road area of Ibadan on Friday 9
November 2018.
“A preliminary
investigation has therefore been conducted into the incident and it was evident
that the account as reported was not accurate but rather misleading.
“The Logistics Command has
set up a panel of inquiry into the incident. The general public can be rest
assured that the NAF, being a highly professional and disciplined force, will
not tolerate any acts of indiscipline that violate the rights of any Nigerian
from any of its personnel or cover up any erring ones.
“Any NAF personnel found
wanting or culpable of any offence after full investigation shall be punished
in accordance with the law of the land and in reflection of the NAF’s
commitment to professionalism and responsibility to the Nigerian people.”
The statement further said
members of the public will be kept informed on the outcome of the
investigations.
Meanwhile, the Chief of the
Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on Tuesday, November 6,
conducted an inspection tour of the proposed site for a NAF Forward Operating
Base (FOB) in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna state.
Legit.ng gathered that the
establishment of the FOB, along with a helicopter landing pad and support
facilities, is aimed at enhancing NAF’s response capability in dealing with
security threats within the area, working in synergy with other security
agencies.
The CAS, who was
accompanied on the visit by other senior officers from NAF headquarters, also
seized the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on the Emir of Birnin Gwari,
Mallam Zubairu Jibril Mai Gwari II, at his palace.
