Nigerian writer, Sugabelly has sparked a debate on Twitter after she questioned why a couple decided to have a child when they didn’t have up to N50k in the bank.
Sugabelly wrote:

“People who don’t have 50,000 naira, should they be having children???”

She added:

We keep complaining about how poverty is increasing yet here are people deliberately manufacturing poverty. How can you have a child knowing full well you don’t even have a spare 50 thousand in the bank to cover a medical emergency? Children are not cheap! Why do such a thing?

See some reactions below.

@Chykdyke2  Do you actually think about life situations at all?…how about if something had happened after their child bearing maybe loss of job or something that got them into economic crisis. If you can’t help simply say you can’t nd keep quiet.

@Asemota   “This is not right. Circumstances change daily. I have had $150k once in a year then had to borrow in August of that year to survive. No condition is permanent.”

@Irenesharesluv It is necessary to only have the number you can provide for with or without a good paying job, people with small families are happier.
Another Twitter user replied: “Asking for 50k doesn’t mean they’ve not spent. People expend savings on health issues & have to resort to seeking help to complete it 2 things you can never be completely prepared for with savings. 1 is health & the other is court case. You can’t see the end from the beginning.”
