Bola Tinubu said Amotekun presents a great opportunity for the country in its quest to enthrone true federalism, of which he has been an advocate since 1999.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,
national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), weighed in on
the
controversy around the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network,
saying it has not endangered the foundation of the country.
It was his first reaction
since the security outfit, with the code-name Amotekun was launched in Ibadan
almost two weeks ago.
“Shorn of the overly
dramatic language, what lies before us is but a step in the evolution of our
federalism. This is an opportunity to more clearly define that federalism”, he
wrote.
He also explained why he
had kept a studied silence, until know, despite the baiting from some quarters.
He called for a private
discussion between the Governors of the South-west and the Attorney-General and
Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami, to resolve misunderstanding over
the security outfit.
He also pointed out areas
of Amotekun operation that should be remedied for effectiveness.
He said the foundation of
the country had not been put at risk with the South-west regional security
outfit launched by the governors of the zone in a bit to confront the
insecurity in their states.
The former Lagos governor,
however, warned that, that fabric could be torn by what he called the
“dangerous rhetoric of those who should know better.”
Asiwaju Tinubu said: “Those
claiming that this limited, inoffensive addition to security threatens the
Republic have taken themselves upon a madcap excursion.
