The CJ, who discharged the inmates on Tuesday, said the exercise was in line with the powers bestowed on him by the law.
The Chief Judge (CJ) of Nasarawa State, Justice Suleiman Dikko, has discharged 15 inmates awaiting trial in Lafia medium security custodial centre.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dikko listed the names of the inmates to include Danjuma Mohammed, Baba Bello, Stella Idu, Makama Francis, Paul Joseph, Ternenge Kagher, Muhammadu Abubakar and Abdulkarim Suleiman.

Others were Suleiman Adamu, Musa Isah, Ibrahim Isa, Awalu Saidu, Rufus Musa, Moses Godiya and Nural Adamu.

Justice Dikko explained that one of the inmates, Nura Adamu, was discharged for not being taken to court for more than five years.

He said the inmate has been in awaiting trial since 2014 without being taken to court for prosecution, hence the need for his discharged.
He also urged the authority of the custodial centre to compile the names of all awaiting trial inmates who have been in detention for so long without being taken to court and submit to him for prompt action.

He explained that the routine visit to custodial centres was part of his duties aimed at decongesting the facilities in the state and ensuring justice to inmates who were wrongly detained.

He urged the police, custodial centre authority, and other stakeholders to rise up to their responsibilities in order ensure speedy dispensation of justice in the state.
The CJ, however, advised the discharged inmates to exhibit good character as they go out and steer clear of any crime that would bring them back to the prison.

Earlier, Emmanuel Okoro, Nasarawa State Controller of Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), told the CJ that the custodial centre lacked sufficient vehicles to convey awaiting trial inmates to courts and appealed for assistance in that direction
