Burna Boy Is The First Nigerian Artist To Win Edison Award

Burna Boy has been announced the winner of the Edison Award -- an award given to people to acknowledge their contribution and innovation.

The win makes Burna Boy the first Nigerian artist to win the Edison award and the third African.

Only Youssou N'Dour and Angélique Kidjo ever won.

Youssou won in 1994, while Angélique Kidjo won in 2018, and two years after Nigeria's Burna Boy wins too.

In recognizing Burna Boy's for his African Giant single and also the artiste, the Dutch-speaking platform stated that Burna's music is not just a great reminder of Fela's music but also a great work that fits seamlessly into today's pop music culture.

''The Nigerian Burna Boy is a sensation in world and pop music.  His music is unmistakably African, but fits seamlessly into today's pop music culture.  'African Giant' contains a challenging mix of Rap, RnB, Reggae and African pop music and at times recalls the also Nigerian great Fela Kuti.''
