A US Lawmaker, Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland tried to bring gun onto the Congress floor but was denied entry into the building after setting off a metal detector near the entrance to House chamber, according to a Friday, January 22 report by Huffington Post.
After the alarm set off, Capitol Police then checked him and discovered a gun concealed inside his coat.Harris then asked another lawmaker, Rep. John Katko of New York to take the gun so he can enter the chamber and vote on granting a waiver that would let retired Army General Lloyd Austin serve as President Joe Biden’s defence secretary.
Katko refused holding his gun, saying he had no license to carry guns. Harris then left the premises and returned minutes later without his firearm.
The incident which happened on Thursday, January 21, comes after the House imposed new safety rules following the January 6 MAGA riot at the US Capitol.
Rep. Lauren Boebert
(pictured below) , has bragged about her desire to carry her pistol into the Capitol, and had a standoff
with Capitol Police on January 12 as she didn't let them search her bag after
she set off the security alarm on Tuesday night.
It was previously legal for members of the House to carry a gun in office buildings, in the Capitol, and on Capitol grounds.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has
threatened to fine members who refuse to go through the metal detectors or be
scanned.
