Police chief Oeyvind Aas said: ‘The man has been apprehended … from the information we now have, this person carried out these actions alone.
According to report,
five people have died after they were shot by an attacker armed with a bow and
arrow in Norway tonight.
The man is
believed to have started his rampage in a Coop supermarket, and then walked
around the town shooting others.
Several others
were injured, including a police officer.
‘Several people
have been injured and several are dead.’
He added that
it was ‘natural’ to consider whether this was an act of terrorism, but that it
was too early to come to conclusions.
Police are
considering whether other weapons aside from the bow and arrow may have been
used in addition.
There has been
a major response from emergency services with armed police, helicopters and
more than ten ambulances on scene.
Local media
said that the man first opened fire in a Coop Extra supermarket.
The attacks
then reportedly took place across a wider area as the man walked around the
town of 28,000 in the south east of the country.
Police said the
male suspect had been detained and taken to a police station.
British
Ambassador to Norway Richard Wood tweeted: ‘Police confirming that five people
have been killed in #Kongsberg and several injured including a policeman.
‘A shocking
incident. Sincere condolences to those affected.’
Minister of
justice and public security Monica Maeland has been updated on the attacks and
is monitoring the situation, the government said.
