Gleaming Steel Makes New World Trade Centre The Tallest US

The silver spire topping New York City's One World Trade Centre has been fully installed.
The structure brings the iconic building in lower Manhattan to its full, symbolic height of 1,776 feet (541.32 metres).

The US declared independence on July 4, 1776.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the spire's installation was completed on Friday morning.

Construction workers below applauded the milestone.

Pieces of the 758-ton spire were transported to the roof of the building last week.

The 408ft (124.36m) structure will serve as a world-class broadcast antenna.

An LED-powered light emanating from it will be seen from miles away.

The addition of the spire makes One World Trade Centre the tallest structure in the US and third-tallest in the world.

However building experts disputed whether the spire is actually an antenna - a crucial distinction in measuring the building's height.

Without it, One World Trade Centre would actually be shorter than the Willis Tower in Chicago, which stands at 1,451 feet (442.26 metres).

The new tower is at the northwest corner of the World Trade Centre site, which is well on its way to reconstruction with the 72-storey Four World Trade Centre and other buildings.

It is slated to open for business in 2014 with tenants to include the magazine publisher Conde Nast, the government's General Services Administration and Vantone Holdings China Centre, which will provide business space for international companies.
