A prosecutor, Peace Okpara,
told the court the accused persons were arrested on February 19 for operating a
baby factory at Ogwuago, Abakpa-Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area.
The Magistrates’ Court
sitting in Enugu State on Wednesday arraigned one Ifeoma Eke, for allegedly
selling her baby for N500, 000.
Mrs. Eke was arraigned
alongside three other persons involved in the act.
“The accused persons
operated a business where young women were made pregnant, nursed and the baby
would be sold out after birth.
“A certain amount would be
given to the baby’s mother based on the agreement between the mother and the
accused persons.
“The first accused person
gave birth to her baby after which she conspired with the other accused persons
and sold it for N500, 000,” Okpara said, adding that the offences contravened
the Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Law Enforcement and Administration Act,
2003 as amended.
In his ruling, the
Magistrate, Chuks Mbah, ordered that the case file be transferred to the
Director for Public Prosecution, DPP, for advice.
Mbah adjourned the matter
to October 28 for mention.
